My name is Doug Denneny Doug's picture and I'm a Democratic candidate for Virginia's 11th Congressional District.
I'm a New Generation Democrat. I'm strong on defense, believe in fiscal discipline and I'm socially progressive.
I want to bring change to the 11th District and to Washington DC, and to improve our nation for this generation and future generations.
I was recently endorsed in my run for Congress by Cong. Patrick Murphy (D-PA 8th).
I will be live blogging today, 12/27 from 8-9 PM e.s.t. You can send your questions now in the comments section and I'll answer your questions live tonight. I've enjoyed interacting on Dailykos and other progressive sites for the past several months, and I look forward to hearing and answering your questions. You can read more about me at my website at dougforcongress.com (more)
I am a former naval commander and naval flight officer with over 22 years of service to our nation. I served in combat and I am highly decorated.
But I know that military strength is only one aspect of a strong national defense. We also need to lead through diplomacy, cooperation and respect. Today's tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Bhutto underscores the need for American leaders who bring a good understanding of national security issues and interational affairs. We undermine our national security by trying to justify torture, secret prisons and unlawful wiretapping. We strengthen our leadership by taking a global leadership role on global warming, ensuring that our education system is second to none and that we balance the federal budget. Passing a deficit to our children to pay for today's consumption is a violation of my moral code and must be stopped.
On progressive issues, I believe that people should be allowed to pursue their "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" without oppressive oversight and interference from the government. I think women have a right of choice, that gays should be able to be in relationships of their choosing and we should all be free to practice our religion it we want.
I most firmly believe we need to leave a better world for our children. We must reduce our energy consumption, find alternatives to fossil fuels, and take steps to reverse global warming. On a local level, we must fix the transportation problems we face. I support a rail line to Dulles airport and fought to ensure that the line goes underneath Tysons Corner. I would like to see more telecommuting options--particularly for Federal government employees.
There are many issues in my campaign. But my New Generation Democrat philosophy of a Strong Defense, Fiscal Discipline and Progressive Social values will guide me in my decisions.
You can see my recent live TV appearance on my website at dougforcongress.com and with a federal financial reporting deadline approaching at the end of the month, any contributions, large or small to my campaign will be greatly appreciated.
Together, we can make a difference for this and future generations.
Thanks,
Doug Denneny
